Most people raised in a closed, tightly controlled information environment — where certain hatreds are taught as simple fact and dissent is dangerous — never leave that worldview behind. It takes real independence of mind, and real courage, to notice the cracks in a narrative you were raised inside, and, when you realized it was actually the opposite of the truth, to walk away from it anyway.

This day honors a growing group of people who did exactly that: raised in communities where hostility toward Jews, the West, or 'infidels' generally was simply assumed, who nonetheless built relationships across those lines, questioned what they'd been taught, and now speak openly about what that journey looked like from the inside.

Some left their faith entirely. Some converted. Some remain believers, but reject the version of the triumphalist religiosity that treats outsiders as enemies — even though that choice has cost some of them their relationships, their safety, or their standing in their own communities. What unites them isn't where they landed, but that they proved one doesn't have to stay locked into the worldview in which one was raised.
