Day 26 — October 6

The Deadliest Front You've Never Heard of II: Nigeria

Nigeria has been the deadliest country on Earth to be Christian for eight years running — and most people have never heard about it.

Nigeria has ranked as the world's most dangerous country for Christians for eight consecutive years. In the most recent reporting year alone, roughly seven out of every ten Christians killed worldwide for their faith died in Nigeria — driven by a combination of jihadist groups and armed militias operating largely unchecked across the country's Middle Belt and northeast.

Most people outside Nigeria have never heard these numbers. When this violence does make Western news, it's often described in vague terms — 'clashes,' 'unrest,' 'farmer-herder conflict' — language that obscures the ideology driving the attacks and the specific communities being targeted.

This day is dedicated to naming both plainly: who's carrying out this violence, who they're targeting, what their targets suffer, and why one of the deadliest ongoing conflicts in the world has stayed so far outside the global conversation.
