What they bring
An independent scholar writing under a pseudonym adopted for security, he has spent decades on the historical origins of Islam, the Qur'an, apostasy and jihad — beginning with Why I Am Not a Muslim (1995).
Why they're here
He is the reason a month like this can cite sources rather than slogans. His anthologies on Qur'anic textual criticism and the historical Muhammad put the primary material in English, and his work on apostasy made leaving Islam a human-rights question instead of a private embarrassment. He also supplies the long memory: the arguments now called new were made, and answered, decades ago.
